Cuba Church of Christ

"A GROWING CHURCH FOR A GRACIOUS GOD" is the slogan for the Cuba Church of Christ in the small, rural community of Cuba, Kentucky in southern Graves County. Although the community itself is not large enough for a post office or even a red light, on Sunday mornings approximately 300 people meet to worship together at the church—while over 400 consider themselves associated with the church at Cuba. As the largest Church of Christ in Graves County and the largest rural church of Christ in the state of Kentucky, our members radiate in all directions from Cuba. In fact, we have members who travel as far as 60 miles to come to Cuba for worship services. Something special is going on here. What makes Cuba stand out as one of the most progressive, growing rural churches in the state? We believe it is the importance placed on Christ, the grace of God, our visitation program and the emphasis we place on being a family. Each time we meet our members feel they are attending a big family reunion! The growth the Cuba church has experienced over the last fifteen years is due to some amazing work. The church’s visitation program, established by men and women who were willing to go into the community weekly to invite people to come and worship, has directly resulted not only in new members, but more importantly, in new Christians. Members of the Cuba church give names of family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to visitation team volunteers. Those people are then visited and invited personally to attend our services. In addition, Bible studies are offered and continued visitation occurs. These are not just “one-time” door knockings. The church at Cuba truly cares about people. In one year alone, our attendance increased by seventy directly related to our visitation teams. As the church experienced this phenomenal growth, the need for additional space became prominent. In the last ten years, the Cuba Church of Christ under the leadership of three elders, James Baker, Robert Crosslin, and Garry Turbeville, built a fellowship hall with five classrooms in the basement, a new 60’ x 100’ fellowship hall/gym, and most recently, a 60’ x 100’ auditorium that was completed in April of 2000. Though the new auditorium seats over 300, a joyous problem has resurfaced—we again need more space! The Cuba church is growing because God is pleased with what He sees here. Our present elders are George Cates, Will Clark, and Johnny Myers. In 2005 we again added to our present facility and built an office area. It has offices for the preacher & youth minister, conference room/library, classroom, workroom, reception area and break room. We are now in the process of building a garage for our church bus and van. Our members work together to make a great impact in our area in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. On a regular Sunday morning, over eighty teenagers and youngsters attend our services. We continually look for ways to involve our young people in the Lord’s work. The young men of the church conduct our 5th Sunday evening services. We also know that learning about God is an important aspect for our youth. With regular monthly devotionals and the opportunity to attend area wide devotionals, our teens are fed spiritually. Being at the Cuba church as pulpit minister has been a great blessing for me and my family. I first moved to Cuba in 1984 and stayed until 1993. After being away for four years, I returned in 1997 and every month since has been exciting. To see how God is blessing our efforts and how people from such different backgrounds are coming together for the cause of Christ is truly amazing. I know God is blessing us and He alone deserves all the praise. Cuba meets on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. for Sunday School and 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. for Worship Services. Our Wednesday Bible study is at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to come worship with us at each and every service. And you can be certain that you will be welcome because at Cuba we truly believe each person is important because God made each of us special! |
